Anyone who has priced a server refresh recently knows the problem. Drives, memory, and other core components cost more than they did a year or two ago, and lead times for some hardware are hard to predict. For CloudStack operators, this is a planning problem as much as a budgeting one. The easy answer, buying more hardware, is now the most expensive and least reliable one.
The better question is how much more your existing infrastructure can deliver.
Storage is where the leverage is
In a CloudStack environment, storage architecture largely decides how much usable capacity you get from every drive you buy, how many VMs each host can run before storage becomes the bottleneck, and how long your current hardware stays useful. Those three factors determine how often you need to buy new hardware.
StorPool Storage is a software-defined block storage platform that runs on commodity servers of your choice, so you aren’t paying a premium for proprietary arrays or for drives marked up by a storage vendor. A few design choices matter most when hardware is scarce:
- More usable capacity from the same drives. Thin provisioning, instant snapshots, and cloned provisioning keep data efficient, and data protection options including triple-mirroring and erasure coding let you balance resilience and capacity for each workload.
- Higher VM density. With storage latency under 100 µs and a low-overhead architecture, storage stops being the limiting factor, so each host can run more VMs at the performance your users expect. Per-VM and per-disk QoS policies keep busy tenants from affecting their neighbors.
- Longer hardware lifespan. A clustered, shared-nothing architecture lets you add or retire nodes and upgrade the storage layer with zero downtime. You can extend the life of existing servers and add capacity gradually instead of in large, expensive refresh cycles.
- Pay-as-you-grow licensing. You pay for the data you actually store, not for the capacity you provision, which fits a world where you’d rather not over-buy hardware in advance.
Everything stays inside CloudStack
None of this adds complexity for your team. StorPool’s free native CloudStack plugin handles storage tasks automatically as you create and manage VMs. Volumes, snapshots, cloned provisioning, QoS, and disaster recovery are all managed through the CloudStack UI, CLI, and API. StorPool’s engineers handle design, deployment, tuning, monitoring, and maintenance of the storage layer, so your team can stay focused on running the cloud.
Proven in production
StorPool delivers 99.999% uptime across its customer base. CloudStack operators like RapidCompute, Pakistan’s first enterprise-class public cloud platform, and Amito, which runs hundreds of TBs across 28 data centers, have replaced legacy storage with StorPool. Amito needed 35% less storage space for the same data after migrating, which is the kind of result that matters when every terabyte is harder to source.
