Giving Back to Apache CloudStack and How ShapeBlue Stays Technically Engaged

Apache CloudStack stands out as a mature and production-proven open-source IaaS platform, trusted to power large-scale environments. It enables mission-critical infrastructure for enterprises, service providers, and telcos worldwide. Like any open-source project, its long-term sustainability depends on the strength and active participation of its community.

At ShapeBlue, contributing back is not an afterthought, it’s integral part of how we operate. Our goal is to ensure Apache CloudStack continues to evolve as a modern reliable, and secure cloud management platform that meets the demands of real-world production environments.

Supporting the Project

As the leading independent integrator of CloudStack technologies globally, ShapeBlue maintains an ongoing engineering commitment to the Apache CloudStack project. Our contributions span feature design, development, testing, documentation, and community support.

Feature Development

We don’t develop features only for our customers, but also for the broader community, aligning our work with real-world needs and emerging technologies in the cloud ecosystem. We continuously design and implement new capabilities, working side-by-side with the community. These developments are driven by real-world customer needs and operational experience, helping to ensure that the platform evolves to meet modern requirements. Our focus is on delivering meaningful, production-grade enhancements that are robust, maintainable, and beneficial to the entire CloudStack user base.

Roadmap Collaboration

Our engineers are actively involved in shaping the technical direction of Apache CloudStack. This includes participation in technical design reviews, feature proposal, and long-term architectural planning within the community. We collaborate closely with maintainers, contributors, and service providers to ensure that the project roadmap reflects real-world deployment challenges and aligns the evolving demands of modern cloud environments.

Community Engagement

ShapeBlue believes that a strong community is the foundation of any successful open-source project. That’s why our team actively contributes across community channels such as mailing lists, Slack, and GitHub discussions. This ongoing engagement fosters a culture of collaboration and openness within the CloudStack ecosystem, helping users of all experience levels succeed.

Event Organisation & Contribution

Events pay a crucial role strengthening connections and sharing knowledge across the community. ShapeBlue plays a key role in organising CloudStack events, including the flagship CloudStack Collaboration Conference. Our team contributes to all aspects, from logistics and sponsorship to speaker coordination and promotion. We also deliver technical sessions at each event, keeping the community informed about the latest feature developments and advancements in Apache CloudStack.

Lowering the Barrier to Entry

One of the biggest hurdles for open-source infrastructure projects is their steep learning curve. To help new users and organisations evaluate CloudStack more easily, we’ve developed a set of hands-on resources:

CloudStack Public Demo Cloud

The ShapeBlue-powered CloudStack Demo offers a hands-on opportunity to explore the capabilities of Apache CloudStack, with no installation or configuration required.

Getting started is simple:

  • Register your Account on the CloudStack Demo portal.
  • Confirm your Subscription to verify access and unlock the demo cloud.
  • Access the 14-day CloudStack Demo and start exploring Apache CloudStack right away.

Once inside, you’ll have access to a fully functional Apache CloudStack environment for two weeks.
